One of the drawbacks of current internet technology is that it takes a measurable amount of time for any website page to transfer from the computer on which it resides - which could be anywhere in the world - to the computer which has asked to view it. 

Normal text pages are not a problem because the file sizes are generally small. However, graphics files (photographs and other images) are very large - and as usual, there is no free lunch. The better the quality of the image, the larger the size and the longer it takes to arrive on your screen.

Good graphics are essential to a successful website - both in quality and in composition. Therefore, to achieve acceptable download times but still present an attractive page, the skilful designer must always strike exactly the right balance between file size and the quality of images.

use of code - using an HTML code alternative instead of an actual graphic which enables the page to load faster
