Internet (Domain) Name

The first important technical issue to be resolved is the domain name - a technical term for the internet address of the site.

Every single website has a unique identifier so that computers know where to look in the world wide web. Conventions have been agreed internationally to group web addresses by different extensions. For example, 'companyname.com' is a commercial website anywhere in the world; 'companyname.co.uk' is a United Kingdom website, and so on.

The 'companyname' can be anything suitable consisting of 4 characters or more, but it must be unique. Once a name has been registered, that combination cannot be used by anyone else. Naturally, all the popular names have already been allocated and it is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain appropriate names for businesses. Therefore, if you are contemplating moving onto the web - don't delay, at least in registering your preferred name!

When choosing a name, consider these points:

the name - should obviously reflect the business as closely as possible

keep it short - remember that most people are not typists and they can lose interest very quickly

avoid dots, hyphens and dashes - sometimes they are unavoidable, but they can cause confusion and mis-typing

your area of business - if a business is predominantly supplying the UK market, a '.co.uk' extension is probably most suitable. For international businesses, a '.com' extension is more likely to attract visitors from all over the world
